connecting to printer

I have been using my HP printer for a while with no issues. Suddenly when i go to print, it keeps saying "Printer not connected". I turned the printer off, unplugged it and restarted my computer but it still won't connect. However, I can print fine from my iPhone, so the printer is working fine. I then went into system preferences to reset the printer, which deleted it from the list. Now when i try to add it back in by clicking the + button inside printers and scanner window, it won't find the printer. Nothing shows up except Adobe PDF 8.0 - whatever that is. This all happened out of the blue and I can't fix it - please help!
