I've always shot with Prosumer camcorders but I'm considering getting a Sony a6700. Apple does not list it among its supported cameras for FCP. Will footage ingest natively or will it need to be transcoded?
Also, I've never shot Log but if the footage needs to be transcoded to Prores, is the Log data maintained?

Apple doesn’t test every camera model. Both the A6000 and the A6400 are listed. FCP will support some formats that the camera shoots natively, though perhaps not all. There are some XAVC types I don’t recognize.
Could you take some test footage at the store to your memory card and test it in FCP? ...can people do that or do they have to blindly buy new gear and hope for the best?
I love that method and I always try to buy from real camera stores. Two years ago I moved though and the nearest camera store is 120 miles away. (I do plan on buying this from my old camera store and having them ship it. They're great, and their price is the same as BH or Amazon. https://mpex.com/)

Maybe they could test it for you? Or if you could to buy it, and return if it does not work in your workflow? I prefer to buy from a trusty knowledgeable brick and mortar store (sp?) than from some cheap on-line store.
