iPhone Speech feature on Notes no longer Works when you go to Control Centre

iPhone 16.3.1 and text to speech:

You used to be able to select text (or use the speech to text two finger slide down from the top of the screen controller) and have Apple read the text back to you whether you went to the control centre to adjust the brightness or the volume the speech continued, I’m pretty sure it did it when you went to other apps it carried on speaking in the background but now it doesn’t? I went to turn screen brightness down using the control centre and text to speech stopped. I now have to readjust the highlighted area because I’ve only heard some of it and then select speech again?

Why is it particularly in the last few years that soo many things that you want to do, that used to be simple on an iPhone or a MacBook, are now more convoluted (more clicks to access for example) and certainly less user friendly and convenient? (I’ve bought Apple products since the year 2000).
