AirPods don't automatically connect to Mac

I have had my AirPods connected to a different apple id for a long time and they would switch devices seamlessly with no problems, but now after removing them from my old apple id and adding them to my new one, I have to put them in pairing mode to connect them to my Mac every single time I want to use them. Ive tried reseting them and checked to make sure they aren't connected to the old apple id anymore. Any thoughts?

Resetting the AirPods was a good trouble-shooting step to try:

You may want to try setting the AirPods up again:

You might want to check that you are only connecting AirPods to one device at a time.
