internal disc burner not working

I have a mid 2012 macbook pro and was just forced to upgrade to catalina (i haven't had a chance to upgrade my whole laptop yet due to cost) - but when i went to burn a disc from a playlist (i have an internal CD drive) it said "No supported Disc burners found" - but my laptop has a disc burner and i burned CDs all the time but now i can't since upgrade . . . how is this fixed? Frustrating (was trying to make a audio CD for songs for my classroom)
