iPad Pro charging issues

Tuesday morning I opened my iPad Pro (4th generation 12-9", IOS 16.6) after being plugged in and saw that it was at 6% battery. I put it back on the charger using my usb c cable that came with the iPad and nothing happened.

So I did a hard restart plugged it back in and it showed the battery was charging. Then I came back 20 minutes later and it was not charging. Did another hard start and still not charging and did a quick iCloud backup. Then a quick web support search and based on some suggestions took it and plugged it into my Macbook Air using the apple usb c cable and again no charging. Unplugged the Thunderbolt charger cable from my Mac and tried it in the iPad and still no charging. By now it had died and I kept trying to hard reboot with the apple logo coming up for a few seconds and then nothing. Made a Genius bar appt for Wednesday.

At the Genius bar the tech tried all of the normal procedures to revive the dead iPad and no luck. He then said they have another computer "in the back" and asked if it was ok to do a full reset. I said fine. 20 minutes later he brought it back showing 5% battery and I had to set it up as a new iPad. We then plugged it in to continue charging with all of the apple cables at the table and still not showing charging. He then grabbed a Thunderbolt 3 cable plugged it in and it was charging. The tech told me I needed to always use a Thunderbolt to charge from now on. Wondering if anyone else has seen this in iPad pros purchased it 2/2021?

You don’t require a Thunderbolt cable to charge your iPad - however, your iPad will charge at its maximum supported charge rate when charged using a 20W USB-C Power Adapter and USB-C charging/data cable (both as supplied with your iPad Pro).

For future reference, these support pages should help with troubleshooting battery and charging issues:

Charge and monitor the iPad battery - Apple Support

If your iPad won't charge – Apple Support

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W (i.e., 2.4A @5V) or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters (1.0A @5V) intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow. Recent models of iPad are supplied with a 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Some third-party USB-C power adapters (and portable PowerBanks) may not support USB PD (Power Delivery). Power Delivery mutually negotiates the charging voltage; the source, load and cable are all elements involved in the negotiation protocol. Unless the Power Adapter explicitly supports USB PD, it will almost certainly fail to charge the iPad; proprietary charging standards, such as QC (Quick Charge), are not supported.

Many computer USB ports also cannot source sufficient power to charge an iPad. Unless explicitly designed for charging connected devices, computer USB ports are typically limited to 0.5-1A @5V (i.e., 2.5-5.0W).

If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

Well, if the iPad charges with a cable that you have, Thunderbolt or otherwise, then you have a working solution. That said, you iPad should successfully charge with the supplied Power Adapter and USB-C cable.

If the iPad won’t charge with the Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter and supplied cable - there are three possibilities:

1) The iPad itself has an undetected fault.

2) Either the Power Adapter or cable are defective.

3) Your iPad has a system software issue. Ensure that you have updated to the most recent version of iPadOS - at time of writing, this being iPadOS 16.6.

Thank you for responding. Maybe I was not clear in my post. At the genius bar after they were able to reset, the only way to get my iPad to show as charging was using the apple 20W usb c charger and an apple thunderbolt cable. This was after the tech tried numerous usb c cables and chargers the iPad would not charge. The tech said no issues came up in their diagnostics and had no answers for why the charging was only available using the thunderbolt cable. I came home a got the same results using my apple supplied usb c charge and usb c cable not showing a charge. As soon as I substituted a thunderbolt cable it began charging.....
