Downloading from the Store

i just got a new iPhone and I’m a first time user. I thought downloading from the store is free, not until I saw that I needed to purchase apps with real money such as the likes of WhatsApp. Please is this meant to be, if not how do I rectify it

The Apple Store has both 100% free and paid apps, as well as apps that are free to download, but then have a free trial that automatically renews into a paid subscription or in-app purchases.

Whatsapp is entirely free. No price to download, no subscription, and no in-app purchases whatsoever. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/whatsapp-messenger/id310633997

The App store may require you to have a payment method on file, but it will not charge you anything for free apps.

If its requiring a payment method, you must add one. Once its verified, it can be removed, and will not ask for it again.
