Why does iMovie run badly on M1 Mac minis?

When I run iMovie it works "ok" but I get a lot of spinning rainbows. After closing my browser or other program will lock and I have to reboot. This only happens after running iMovie. This is a daily occurrence for me. I got the M1 Mac Mini with 16GB of ram because I wanted to be able to run iMovie better, but it is absolute garbage. It acts like it has a memory leak and eventually runs out of ram. My system is completely up to date. In fact, after my last update, the record feature stopped working inside iMovie. Now I have to record audio in Quicktime and overlay it. This is literally a joke. Been using Mac for 15 years. Linux before that. I never had these problems until "upgrading" to the M1 chip. Very disappointed. This is my second M1. The issue followed the chip.
