When I tried that,P. Phillips, the message still opens. What I would like to do is delete any conversation that I KNOW is junk without having to open it...I can do this on the iPhone but seem to have to click on the text and it opens - then it can be deleted...is there a way around this?

In second image >> Swipe Left to bring up the Delete ( Red icon ) and click on it to delete it
I'm not on Ventura at the moment but you should be able to hover the cursor over the message in the sidebar and swipe left without seelecting it first.
