Low battery level warnings causing unreliability and creating uncertainty

I have a MacBook Pro 13" 2019, 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports, running Ventura 13.5. I experience low battery power level warnings. However, immediately turning on the power point (I do tend to leave the power cable plugged in even when not charging), the battery level jumps to a value that should certainly not provide any warnings (eg a jump from 1% to 57%). Would the battery require repair or is there something simpler I can try first? Perhaps I mean "cheaper"! The Apple Support site provides an estimated cost to repair of more than $400 (AUD, shown as A$).

This has not created any real problems yet, but the uncertainty in my mind about the Mac's reliability is, well, not comfortable.

[…]Thanks for replying. You think replacing the battery is the only option, and not some update to software?
