Problem Trying to Install Office Home & Student 2021

As directed by the instructions in the box, I went to office.com/setup to obtain the installer. Using the Product Key provided, I was able to successfully redeem it. I dragged the installer to my desktop as it downloaded to my Downloads folder. After I clicked on it to start the installation process, I kept getting this error message:

This file "Microsoft_Office_16.28.19081202_installer.pkg.download" doesn't appear to be a valid download file.

After trying several times and receiving the same error message, I contacted MS Support. Two different technicians worked with me and we still were not able to install Office.

They tried having me trash the first installer and obtain a fresh one. This time it was:

Microsoft_Office_16_40_20081000_BusinessPro_Installer.pkg.download

They also had me download Firefox and try to install Office with it. I changed my browser preference over to Firefox under System Preferences -> Default Browser. I was told to hold the Control key down and click on the installer again. That window shows that Safari is the default browser, though --- not Firefox. Then I was told to use the "Open with" option and look for Firefox. Firefox was grayed out but Safari was not. When I scrolled down to Safari and clicked on it, I received this error message:

Safari can't resume this download "Microsoft_Office_16.40.20081000_BusinessPro_Installer.pkg.download". It doesn't appear to be a valid download file.

I am not sure why the second technician had me download the BusinessPro installer when I bought the regular Home & Student edition. Isn't the first installer the one that I'm supposed to use?

Also, does anyone know why I keep getting the error message that Safari doesn't consider this a valid download file?

You are welcome.

My individual Office applications update on their own without my intervention. When that occurs, the next time you launch the Office application, you will see a brief verifying progress bar which is Apple's Gatekeeper security doing its part since these applications were installed from the Mac App Store.

I also do not sign in to Microsoft, nor do I use their One Drive cloud service. For each MS application, you may want to visit its individual Preferences : Save panel and enable AutoSave by default, allow background saves, and save AutoRecover info. Establish other preference settings as needed.

Since Word 16.31, it allows you to right-click on a PDF and convert it (as best it can) into a Word .docx document. You may find that handy at some point.

Thank you for your response, VikingOSX. That makes sense. I wonder what is making the download to be incomplete. I know that I have a fast internet connection, and I have not encountered this problem before with any downloads. Do you have any suggestions for how I can get a functioning download for Office 2021. I tried downloading about six times without success?

Again, thank you for taking the time to respond to my post and to point out this error.

Thank you, Barney-15E. Luckily, I am not running any of the ill-advised internet security apps.

When I tried the first two times to download the installer for Office 2021, there was no choice offered between a download for PCs and downloads for Macs. I ended up with ones that ended with exe. I knew I couldn't open them so I dragged them to the trash. I finally was able to download one that at least had a "pkg" in its title, but the first technician told me that it was one for PCs. She then sent a link for one designed for Macs (the first one I mentioned in my first post above). That one wouldn't open. As VikingOSX observed, it ended with "pkg.download" indicating that it is an incomplete download.

Every download that I tried after that with both technicians did not work.

Thanks again!

OMG I think I am going to faint! I just signed back in to my MS account. It said that my product key has already been used and stated that I needed to get my download from my account page. There wasn't anything listed about downloads or installers on my account page, so I checked the menu bar. It had a tab titled, "Services and Subscriptions." I clicked on it. It showed the product (Office Home and Student 2021) that I had purchased along with a button to install. I clicked on the Install link and a window appeared that had, "Download & Install for Mac." I clicked it and found the installer in my Downloads folder.

I dragged the installer to my desktop and tried to open it. At first I received the same error message. A few seconds later, I noticed a miniature white progress bar slowly filling up on the face of the installer. As soon as it reached the end of the bar it changed to that brown box indicating that the download was successful. What a relief!

Office 2021 is now installed after about seven or eight attempts.

Thanks so much to VikingOSX and Barney-15E.

Question: I checked in Word -> Preferences for a place where I can designate that my docs will be saved to my Mac or to my iCloud account instead of to OneDrive. Just like VikingOSX, I do not want to save to OneDrive. I looked in the Floppy Disk icon "Output & Sharing" panel. The "Turn on AutoSave by default", "Allow Background Saves" and "Save AutoRecovery info" are already checked by default. So under Preferences, is there a place to check where my documents are saved to by default? If so, I can't find it.

I do know that for each new document that I create, I can designate where it is saved such as to my Documents folder or desktop. But does that mean that they will also be saved to OneDrive even though I don't want them to go there?

At the top of each new document, the "AutoSave" is off instead of on. When I move the white circle to the on position, a window opens with the message that to turn AutoSave on I have to upload my file to OneDrive-Personal. Do I just leave the AutoSave button to the off position for each new document?

When you first attempt a save or save as of a Microsoft document, you may see a panel that has a left column named Recent folders and under that will be OneDrive Personal. Below that will be another button to Manage Storage Accounts (don't click that either) and then you will see below that On My Mac. Click On My Mac for local-only saves.

Or… you may see a Save panel which indicates local-only saves because the Online Locations button is displayed.

None of this is in the Microsoft application Preferences panes.

I would have posted the screenshots except they contain personal information.
