safari disappears when I open another app...

I usually have 3-4 websites open in Safari at any one time. When I want to upload something, for example a photo to Google lens, as I click on "upload", my safari pages scoots to the left, rendering an upload impossible.

Any ideas?

I have a 2017 Mac desktop running ventura 13.4.1

Thanks

Hello jennibelize,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

Let's test in a private window to see if the same thing happens. These steps can guide you:

"Test with a private window

A website can store cookies, caches and other data on your Mac, and issues with that data can affect your use of the website. To prevent the website from using that data, view it in a private window: From the menu bar in Safari, choose File > New Private Window, or press Shift-Command-N.

If that works, use the following steps to remove the website's data, including its caches and cookies. The website can then create new data as needed. If it's a website that you sign in to, make sure you know your sign-in information before continuing.

  1. Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Privacy.
  2. Click Manage Website Data.
  3. Select the affected website from the list that's displayed.
  4. Click Remove.
  5. Click Done.
  6. Open the website again in a non-private browser window."

Additional details can be found here: If Safari won't open a page or work as expected on your Mac

If the issue persists, can you provdie a few more details? Can you explain in detail what steps you are taking to upload using safari? This will help us further isolate the issue. Also, does this happen on multiple websites.

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested, and opened a private window, and followed the instructions. No change, even in the private window. This has never happened to me before. I was trying to use the split screen, and had sent safari to the left side while I opened my mail on the right. The mail side did not open. If I open Safari now, I can see the whole screen filled with safari and when I open my mail, safari stays put, and the mail app is open over safari, which has always been that way. However, if I have a whole screen filled with safari, and try to open any other app, kindle, klondike, finder, photos, etc, the safari screen disappears to the left again. When I opened safari yesterday morning, I wanted to use google lens to find the ID of a bird. I opened google lens then tried to bring up finder, but as I did so, the safari screen was taken again to the left, and all I had showing was the finder. Obviously I needed to have both safari and finder open in order to up load a picture.

I'm so frustrated! We don't have a mac geek here where I live in Belize, or I'd be off downtown to find one!

Hey jennibelize,

Thanks for trying and keeping us updated with the results! Did you also tried the steps from the article that we provided? There are additional details with steps we recommend you also try.

If you've already done that, let's test this out while you're on safe mode: Use safe mode on your Mac

If you're using an Intel-based Mac

If you're not using a Mac with Apple silicon, you're using an Intel-based Mac.

1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window. If you can't start up in safe mode, make sure that your Mac isn't using a firmware password.

Let us know how it goes. If the issue persists even in safe mode, we recommend that you reach out to Apple Support team next: Apple Support

Cheers!
