Is iMovie music free to use commercially?

I’ve created a movie trailer in iMovie using the music content within the app and used Vimeo to enable me to embed the trailer onto our school website. Vimeo has now removed the video saying that they believe the music to be a copyright infringement. I disputed this stating it was a freely available iMovie trailer, but they say my appeal has been denied and locked my video to private. How can I prove that Apple are allowing me to use this material?

Hi,

Paragraph 2G of the Apple iMovie software license states in part:

"The Apple Software contains media content including but not limited to graphics, audio clips, video clips

and/or templates (“Media Content”). This Media Content is proprietary to Apple and/or its licensors, and

is protected by applicable intellectual property and other laws, including but not limited to copyright.

Except as otherwise provided, all Media Content included in the Apple Software may be used on a

royalty-free basis in your own video projects but may not be distributed on a standalone basis (and

audio Media Content may only be used for your own personal, non-commercial use)."

You can read the entire license agreement by opening iMovie and clicking on iMovie/About iMovie/License agreement. The license agreement may have been updated in the most current iMovie versions, and if that is the case you should verify which license agreement applies to you.

You might try using You Tube instead of Vimeo to embed the video. If You Tube flags it for copyright often you will be presented options for conditional use, such as no monetary benefit, or restrictions as to region or country, or agreeing to ads, etc. Also, sometimes even though it may be flagged the copyright holder will allow unrestricted usage.
