Whenever I start my iMac I get icons that look like hardrives. How do I delete desktop Imac icons in High Sierra 10.13.6. This is a 27" display.

Open Finder > Preferences > General. Uncheck Hard disks & External disks.

If you only want to hide the external disks, just uncheck that setting. On the off chance you are seeing mounted DMG files. Unmount them.
It thinks it's a hard disk, so when I turn off Hard disks or external disks they disappeat including my main Hard disk. To make matters worse I accidentally made a copy

This hides my main HD also. I want to get rid of all other HD's, which are empty, and keep the main HD.
