Can't erase device for recycling
How do I erase my iMac for recycling if it won't boot up, and screen remains black? Does Apple erase it for me? What other options are available if the machine can NOT be erased?

Then you're going to have to diagnose the problem and go to whatever is called for in terms of time, effort and money to revive the Mac. Then you can render it blank.
If it were me, and I wanted to get rid of a dead Mac, I'd open it and drill a few of 1/4" holes in the hard dive and/or logic board, tape it back together and take it to be recycled..
