System overload in Logic?

I have a Mac mini m2 pro with 16GB RAM and 512 HD. Why do I get a system overload in Logic when I'm recording? I have less than 20 tracks. Combination of audio and midi. I bought this mini because I thought it could handle way more than this. I save the file to my external HD. Is that the issue? I thought you were supposed to save to external.

This shouldn't happen, but it's not easy to solve the problem. It's guesswork and trial & error.

• The very first question that comes to my mind is whether you might have transferred content like system, plugins and applications to your new computer using Migration Assistant? This is one of the main reasons why users get problems.

• What is your I/O buffer size? Increase it.

• What sample rate are you using? What sound card are you using?

• How is your external drive formatted? How much space do you have on your internal and external drive? Is the drive fast enogh? Is the connection fast enough?

• Is Logic running natively or in Rosetta mode?

• What plugin are you using? As an example, pitch-related plugins eat more cpu than a compressor. Are all installed plugins up to date?

• Do you have other programs open at the same time?

• Open Activity Monitor to monitor the consumption of computer resources by Logic and other processes

You can switch to Low Latency Mode while redording, don't forget to disable low latency mode while playback.

Thanks for the suggestions.

• I did a clean install, though I did use a back up on certain things so that could be an issue

• Buffer is 128 which is what everyone says it should be

• Using a Focusrite 8i6 so it should be all fine there

• External is formatted APFS and there's plenty of HD space. I don't know what the speed of the disk is though tbh. It's a Seagate and came recommended as a good drive but I'll have to check that

• Running Logic natively

• Don't have a lot of 3rd party plug-ins

• Had a couple of programs open, but I've stopped that

I'll see how things go! It just seems like a lot to check out for what, from all the reviews I've seen, is a machine that should be more than capable.
