Slow Orbi Wi-Fi w/M1 MacBook Pro

my 2021 MacBook Pro is suddenly experiencing very slow Wi-Fi speeds (17-22 mbps) - the identical problem that I found so many threads about in this community, but they all just end without a solve.

I’m the latest version of Monterey n

My Orbi router tests through its app at 560 mbps/down. If I put my M1 laptop in the same spot, connecting to either the 5ghz or 2.4ghz signal, I get a max of 22mbps down. I’ve tried rebooting and resetting the router, turning off Bluetooth and IP tracking prefs in System Prefs, deleted my VPN and all its associated files - and done all of the possible fixes I’ve found in these forums, but still - no luck. It’s not the router, because its speed next to one of the satellites is

Blazing fast. Something with the M1 MB Pro is throttling the speed. If you Google “M1 MacBook Pro Wi-Fi” you’ll find tons of posts on various forums saying the same thing.

has anyone ever been able to solve this mystery? I was about to upgrade to Ventura to see if that helped but there are equally as many posts out there about how M1 MB Pro’s are getting slow Wi-Fi speeds with Ventura.

if you have a fix that worked for you, please chime in!

Hi EastcoasterWestcoaster,

There are a variety of possible causes for Wi-Fi speed discrepancy. Review these and check each element:

1) Router configuration: The support page Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points outlines the recommended settings for your Wi-Fi router to ensure compatibility with Apple products. If you are not familiar with these settings, contact your router manufacturer for assistance in checking or making adjustments to those.

2) Interference: Just as wireless interference can impact a Bluetooth connection as described in If the sound from your wireless headphones cuts out or is distorted there are factors that could be affecting your home Wi-Fi including channel congestion or competing frequencies. One way to check for this is to disable other wireless devices and test your connection in various areas around your home.

3) Software: If you observe this issue across multiple networks, it could be a setting or application on your Mac impacting the speeds. VPNs, security softwares and others are commonly responsible. Test the connection in safe mode per Use safe mode on your Mac to see if you achieve the expected speeds to begin ruling out possible causes.

Regards.

I learned the hard way ... keep a standby router and modem set up and ready.

I've not experience that particular problem, but I have experienced other problems that were simply counter intuitive.

The latest, my wife's iPad kept disconnecting from the router. That's one of eleven devices and all the others did not. No matter what I did it kept disconnecting. And I did all the things you did.

I finally replace the router with the previously setup standby router and the problem vanished. That was three moths ago and the iPad has been flawless ever since. Coincidence? No idea. But the problem disappeared and that's all that matters.

Thanks Bill. Yeah, I’ve been down those roads already - also turned off Bluetooth and Airplay, and done all of the usual recommended things to no avail.

it’s something with the M1 MacBook Pro. This topic exists in quite a few places here in the forum, with several thousand people saying “I have this problem too.” I was hoping to poke the topic and see if anyone ever figured it out.
