SUMIF not calculating in Numbers

I'm trying to calculate totals from different worksheets with SUMIF. Specifically:

SUMIF([IF columns from another worksheet A][match criteria from worksheet B][THEN sum columns from worksheet A])

No matter what I try (putting the matching criteria in quotes, etc.) the formula doesn't seem to work (it returns 0, not the sum). I've double-checked that I'm using the right columns (I am) and the datatypes are correct (they are - all numbers).

Here's the screenshot. For each category in 'Running Totals' I'm trying to sum the matching entries (matched by category) from the 'Ledger' sheet. There are $35 worth of ledger items with the category 'Eating Out', and the 'Amount' column referenced in the formula is the right one (it's the column with the $35 worth of charges), so it should be $35 here.

SUMIF(test-values, condition, sum-values)

Test values should be a column in the Ledger sheet. Whichever column it is that has the categories in it.

Condition should be the cell reference A4 . It does not need quotes or an equals sign but, if you were to do it that way, it would be "="&A4

Sum Values should be a column in the Ledger sheet, which I assume "Amount" is.

personally I would change those table names and change the column headers a little bit. but its just the way I think probably..... (sorry got carried away... the below was something I threw together real quick while watching some youtube)

this method allows you to compare spending per month to see patterns and trends...

You store the data all together, and just add a date (the month col is a "helper" column that will help formulas that dont like Month by name that you might do later).

You just pick the month to view and it displays the months values.
