How do read receipts work on Messages?

I sent someone two messages last night, the first message says read at 9 this morning, but the following still says delivered? How does the first message say read but the one I sent afterwards doesnt if they were sent at the same time last night?

They weren't sent at exactly the same time. They were sent one after another. The person you sent them to read the first one and not the second. This would be quite possible, especially if they had the conversation open when the first message came in, looked at it and then left the messages app.
