Camera quality on iPhone decreased after update

My Iphone 12 Max Pro was updated to the iOS 16.6 this week. Now the camera looks like something straight out of the early 2000s. It won't focus, has fuzzy quality, and, in a nutshell, is the worst. At the very minimum it should be the original quality of camera, should it not?

Thanks.

SravanKrA, I’m sorry but you sound like an engineer who works for Apple trying to dismiss the ongoing issue that’s been recognized for years with Apple. I can provide RAW data showing there is degrade in quality after updates. How Apple hasn’t been sued over this issue has always complexed me. I’m speaking for having the iPhone 15ProMax and noticed this ongoing issue, with the second update of the IOS after the phone was released and more so when there was an additional update to fix the BMW bug.

I agree. Not so much of the quality of the photos I have stored - that remains pretty much unchanged but the photos I now take since the upgrade are terrible. I almost think the upgrade intentionally degraded the quality of the camera to encourage users to purchase a new phone. I plan to do a little traveling over the next few months and I’m thinking I need a new phone just to be able to take good pictures. The difference is noticeable and was quite sudden, not likely due to some underlying problems that already existed or developed gradually overtime, like the accumulation of small scratches on my lenses or something like that as previously suggested. I take very good care of my camera/phone and it has not been exposed to things like moisture or other abuse/miuse. The difference is so noticeable that after faithful apple usage for more than 20 years, I am tempted to switch to an android phone….

Csrer My camera has the same issue now. It cant focus on the subject im trying to video or capture. It constantly refocuses or just blurs out. I used to be able to take amazing photos of flowers in almost darkness and now all i get is a blurry unrecognizable blob. A YouTuber recently came to my business to shoot a video for her channel and the whole video came out looking like it was shot with a camcorder! She apologized profusely to her followers and said “ever since she updated her phone it hasn't been able to focus and the video integrity deteriorated “. So whats up? Not a one off.

Updating iOS on your iPhone should typically not alter the fundamental functionality of the device. It's possible that there were underlying issues before this update, which you might not have been aware of previously or might not have noticed.

In general, iOS updates are designed to enhance the user experience, improve security, and fix bugs, rather than introducing major disruptions to core features. The reported issue of the screen flickering and displaying a white screen after an update is likely caused by factors that are not explicitly mentioned in your post.

iOS updates primarily focus on improving system performance, introducing new features, fixing bugs, and enhancing security. They are designed to preserve your personal data, settings, and information intact.

During an iOS update, your device's operating system is upgraded, but your personal data, such as contacts, photos, messages, and other information, should remain unchanged. However, it's always a good practice to perform a backup of your device before any major update to ensure that your data is safely stored.

It's important to note that while an iOS update itself should not alter personal details, it's possible that certain features or settings may be adjusted or improved with the update. In such cases, you may need to review and adjust specific settings to match your preferences after the update.

Always make sure to read and understand the update details provided by Apple before proceeding with an iOS update, and follow best practices such as backing up your device to minimize any potential risks or complications.

If the issues you mentioned are indeed caused by iOS, it's likely that numerous users who have upgraded to iOS 16.6 are experiencing similar problems. However, in order for the community on this forum to provide helpful responses, it would be beneficial for you to specify the nature of the issue you are encountering. Without this information, it may be difficult for others to address your concern effectively.

With the limited information that you have provided, It is hard to even guess the problems faced by you.

Parts and service history

With iPhone 12 models and later using iOS 15.2 and later, you can go to Settings > General > About to see the parts and service history of your iPhone and you can see if the camera has been replaced. If the repair was done using genuine Apple parts and processes, you will see "Genuine Apple Part" next to Camera.

  • You will see an Unknown Part  message if the camera installation is incomplete or if the camera:
  • Was replaced with a nongenuine camera
  • Was already used or installed in another iPhone
  • Isn't functioning as expected

This message doesn't affect your ability to use your iPhone or access your camera.

If your iPhone's camera has been previously replaced, repaired, or serviced by an unauthorized service provider, it's worth noting that Apple may decline to provide service for your device. The decision to refuse service will depend on the specific components that were affected by the unauthorized service.
