There are no technical methods by which to locate a lost or mislaid Apple Pencil. As the Pencil lacks a network connection through which to communicate its location - and when motionless will shut-down its Bluetooth radio to save power - a mislaid Pencil is undetectable.
Your only option to locate a Pencil is the Mark #1 eyeball…

I think it depends on the version iPad and pencil, but I can’t find details on those specs.
Here is a video on the how. Doesn’t seem to work with my antiquated Air 4, pencil 2, however. Time to upgrade, no doubt.
Find My only works with the new Apple Pencil Pro - this new model of Apple Pencil having been launched since this entire conversation was started in August 2023.
None of the other Apple Pencils support Find My.

My Mark #1 eyeball appears to be faulty. What is Apple going to do about that?

This is dumb. The link has every item Apple sells but the pencil. So you can't even make a complaint about it not being a Find My option. If I can find my lost Air Pod this should be a given.
That would be a great feature! I’ve lost 3 already, 2 Apple, one much less expensive 3rd party. The irony is that after I bought the latest 3rd party pencil, I found the other two a couple of days later.
The problem is the pencil has a very tiny battery, much smaller than your AirPods. To make the pencil work when you want to use it, the pencil shuts down if it isn’t moved for more than a few seconds, thus turning off its Bluetooth radio. As it isn’t sending any signal, there is no way to track it. If the design were changed to keep the pencil on all the time, and thus be trackable, the battery would run down quickly, making it impossible to track it after perhaps 30 minutes to an hour anyway. And then people would complain that their pencil didn’t work if they left it off their iPad for an hour.

Not possible. For an explanation, read this entire thread from the beginning.

Just give the feedback under "iPad".

One of the things I've learned with age is that the world is not always set up for my personal convenience. Obviously, it should be.
