How do you enable volume controls for HDMI connected speakers on MacBook Pro?

I have an HDMI from my MacBook Pro to ASUS 32 monitor. My speaker setup is plugged into the monitor.

When I switch output to my monitor (via HDMI) volume controls become disabled.

I was able to enable volume controls with eqMac, but since the last MacBook Pro update (13.4.1 (22F82)). This workaround no longer works.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 12.6

eqMac is like a few person third party app, I'm sure they are aware of it, it's their bread and butter and in a while they will release something, but this should just work w/o third party apps. Sound working corectly on any OS should be top priority (it is on win and linux). I'd be ok with 90% of new features removed from macOS if sound just worked as it should.

I believe it does work correctly as far as Apple is concerned. They removed the capability a while ago.

You'd have to ask them to add it back as nobody here can bring it back.

In my case using a M1 Mac Mini ( Ventura 13.5.1 ) with Asus VP 278 via Direct HDMI connection.

All Sound and Brightness Controls are passed through the HDMI connection to the controls built into the Monitor

Predicated on the Sound Output as per below is chosen by the user ( me )

Go figure

I have had Belkin High Speed HDMI 2.1 cables connected from my Mac minis to the first HDMI port on my 32-in LG 4K HDMI display and have never had any Apple extended Magic Keyboard control over HDMI volume or screen brightness. Those keys do work with a compatible Bluetooth audio device, be it speaker, headphones, or earbuds.
