iPhone disconnects from Wi-Fi when locked

Hi all,

I own an IPhone 14 pro for 7 months. 4 moths after the purchase I noticed that when I lock my phone and after 2-3 minutes I tap the screen, the Wi-Fi icon disappears and then reappears at the top right screen. All the notifications that I have at this time slot arrive at the same time, when I tap the screen. Sometimes, I get notifications after 15 minutes when I do not tap the screen. I did everything I read about this issue here and in countless sites but the problem persists. Completely restored the device, restored network settings, changed Wi-Fi names, location services, plugged the power, you name it. I don’t know and I don’t care if it is a built in functionality. I don’t want it. Many people with iPhone 14 don’t have this issue. I contacted in person with authorised resellers and they don’t seem to care so my only option is to seek my lawful rights, since the device is completely useless. Any advice would be helpful.

Best regards,

Dimitrios

Hi LD150. Thanks for the reply. Sadly, I have done every step in this article without any luck. I have already diagnosed the device at an authorised reseller and the hardware is OK. I think the issue is software-related because for 1 month after factory reset, the device was non problematic, but just yesterday the issue reappeared.

I would back it up using icloud and another method like your computer.

You will need to do that if replacing hardware so practice is good.

Erase all data and settings in the General , Transfer or reset iphone navigation menu.

Set it up manually from Hello page with no backup restore. No installations . Turn off all icloud settings like photos. See if it still does it. If it does then hardware is quite likely.

All iPhones from the beginning of iPhone time 16 years ago disconnect from Wi-Fi 30 seconds after the phone screen locks, to preserve battery energy, unless the phone is connected to power. This is done because a Wi-Fi connection uses power continuously, whether data are transferring or not. Cellular connections use more energy, but only when actually sending data. There are a few exceptions:

  • If you are streaming audio or video Wi-Fi will stay on
  • If you receive a notification Wi-Fi will reconnect for a few seconds to process the notification
  • And, I think (but I’m not sure) if an app uses Background App Refresh it can wake and use Wi-Fi; however very few apps actually use Background App Refresh.
