preview deletes all text after markup

For some pdf files after I highlight even one word or add some text using the markup tools when I closes and open my file again all the underlieng text is gone and just the markup remains. THis makes preview unreliable to use and it means I need to keep backups of all files I decide to mark up. Is there a fix for this.

I am still on Mnterey and wanted to avoid upgrading until I have finished teaching.

I saw soneone had posted about this a year ago but that one has been closed off without any resolution. Has anyone found a fix for this problem?

The key to preventing this behavior, is to move outside of the text input fields with your mouse pointer and just click. Then save the document.

It seems that Preview can sometimes get confused what is being edited if the text field is the last thing to be inputed.

As for whether or not Ventura does this, I don't know since i don't have it. You also don't want to click on any filled in blocks of shapes before saving. It might want to readjust the focus of the document on what's on top.
