iPad getting hot randomly

I understand that iPads get warmer when using apps with a lot of video, etc. but all I have are a few Safari tabs open with my college work. None of them have video- it’s basically just webpages with text. My iPad hasn’t been left in a heated car, it’s not 90° outside, and I’ve closed all other apps. Still burning up. I have nothing “running” in the background. I have noticed something though, and it’s the same issue with my iPhone: When I have a lot of stored photos or video, even though it says I have plenty of storage left and even though I use iCloud, if I reduce the number of stored videos and photos and sometimes even email, I can get it to cool down. I just did that by sending more videos to shared albums. However, this is total garbage because I have plenty of memory available on both of my devices, I’m not actively using the Photos app, it’s not open, and so they’re not running in the background, so how is it possible that the iPad cools off when I reduce that specific memory load? My iPad is an older pro, but my iPhone is a 13.

It is not unusual for an iPad to become warm when being used - more so when using some types of iPad case. High screen brightness and/or CPU intensive Apps will also create more heat. The key point is that whilst your iPad may become very warm in normal use, the iPad should not become uncomfortably hot to handle.

Sometimes a stalled process can cause a device to become unexpectedly warm. This is often resolved with a forced restart:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
