saving/accessing apple mail via iPhone vs iCloud

I am in a tight financial situation and cannot pay for extra storage in iCloud. So of course, I cannot access my Apple mail as it appears it works thru iCloud, and that is a problem.

However, my iPhone 13 has plenty of unused GB. How can I switch my mail account from iCloud to my phone so I can access my mail? If it requires deleting data, how best to access what is stored so i can delete wisely?Thank you for your attention to this.

Seems you need to empty iCloud. So, download it all to set it up anew...

Downloading All of iCloud:

One thought would be to download all of iCloud, and then search through it in Finder on a Mac. You would download it to an external drive, and then open the drive in Finder. Search through it using the search bar on the top-right corner of the Finder window. Once downloaded, verify you can access it. Once verified, trash what is in there. Use my user tip: Getting a Quick and Direct "iCloud Drive-to-External Hard Drive" Download - User Tip
