show list of users instead of user and password fields on login

I dug an old Mac out of storage and am trying to access old files that I no longer have anywhere else.

I have totally forgotten my user name and my password.

Right now it is at the username and password fields on startup ... if it showed the list of users I would have a better chance.

I know back in the day, after three attempts it would show a hint.

The computer is a late 2011 MacBook Pro 17" and as near as I can figure, it is running High Sierra.

How can I force it to display the list of users at restart instead of the user and password fields?
