Syncing Apple Watch podcasts with iPhone Podcasts

I can't get my podcasts to sync between my iPhone and watch, I'm getting episodes on my watch for podcasts I haven't been subscribed to for a year or more, it's all old content. I've followed all directions, sync while watch is charging etc. but I cannot, for the life of me, get a current podcast to show up on my watch regardless of whether it's downloaded, saved, etc. Does anyone else have this issue or something similar? Saw as similar question from a few months ago, but the conversation is closed.
