iMessages taking up 41GB on my iCloud account even after deleting messages

Almost two months ago, I saw my messages were taking up a good chunk on my iCloud and decided to delete 4 years worth of messages. I waited a few hours for my iCloud to update but nothing happened. I spoke with Apple support over the phone and they advised me to change my Message syncing feature saying this would help expedite the syncing. Still nothing. I go to the Genius Bar and the associate says there's nothing I can do and that I need to wait 30 days before the iCloud servers "update" or "re-sync" and then the changes would show on my storage.

Well, it's been over 2 months and the same problem persists. I have double checked and triple checked, and on all of my devices, I only have messages from 2023. My top conversations only take up a little over 7GB, nowhere near the 41GBs iCloud says my messages take.

I'm at a loss. Has anyone had this same problem or know of any actual solutions?

Hello inkwill88,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. Have you checked the Recently Deleted folder in the Messages app to ensure that the messages are permanently deleted? If not, we recommend to verify that as it may help to update the amount of storage that you're seeing for the Messages app with iCloud. To check on your iPhone, please open the Messages app > tap on "Edit" in the upper left corner > Show Recently Deleted.

If this doesn't help, the next step would be to contact Apple Support. They have the necessary tools to review this further for you. Here's the link to contact them: Get Support

Kind regards.
