Time Machine backup not functioning properly.

Automatic time machine backups on 2015 MacBook Air (running Monterey 12.6.8) not functioning properly. They won't allow selection of the HD disk; only offer external hard drive or other Airport capsule backup. looked into updating to Ventura but that is not offered. Need to get it internally backed up before a Genius Bar appointment Saturday, August 26.2023.

Thank P Phillips. The issue is that the internet has been cutting occasionally while in use and is usually gone for 4 hours to a day for no apparent reason. All indicators say Wi-Fi is fine, four bars, green light, etc. Yet a blank screen comes up say9ing, "You are not connected to the internet." Many calls to tech support have not resolved the problem. In preparing the Genius Bar visit, I am trying to back it up but it only wants an external drive.. Will they work with that? When internet comes back on there is an odd thing happening that makes me wonder if its being hacked.

Welcome

The Time Machine Backup you create on your external Drive is to Protect Your Personal Data incase the Genius Bar needs to make changes on the computer.

They do not need the External Drive.

All the work they will be doing is On the Computer itself.

Not on the TM Backup Drive

Think of the TM Backup as a place you keep important Paper Files you what to protect when going away for a vacation.

I take my import papers like Birth Certificate, Marriage Paper to my Bank and put them in a Safety Deposit Box = Time Machine Backup Drive
