Can't find files in Finder

I cannot find files in Finder. They are two Word files and the two pdf's I created from those two files. I managed to find one of them (which I now cannot recreate) and I can see the missing files if I try Save As. That is the only place I can see them. The file that I opened I have kept open. If I use "Properties", I see a location that does not lead me to the file itself if I open Finder and try to follow that trail. Don't know what to do.

These didn't work but I got something to work this morning. I was able this see the documents, both the Word and the pdf, when I used File/Save As in Word for one of the Word documents that noted above I had kept open and a list came up. I saw the pdf files then right clicked and chose Show in Finder. I was then able to find and open them. After that, I saved into the location I wanted. I may have originally saved these two documents to a back up of my old desktop, which is on my MacBook hard drive. However, I could see other files there. In any event, the problem seems to be solved for now. Thanks to both kaz-k and TheLittles for offering help.
