Apple TV bluetooth keyboard

Will a bluetooth keyboard work with Apple TV 3rd gen wired via ethernet to cable modem, as opposed to using WiFi? While the ATV works (including remote) I can't get it to discover a bluetooth enabled iPhone or iPad (and yes, bluetooth is enabled in both the ATV and the iPhone/iPad).

If I upgrade to the current gen ATV will that make a difference?

Thanks in advance.

Apple TV (3rd generation) [A1427 or A1469] (2012 or 2013 model) can connect to an (Apple) bluetooth keyboard, but not to other bluetooth devices. This does not depend on ethernet vs. Wi-Fi.

Not sure why you are trying to connect with iPhone or iPad over bluetooth. Any data transfer would happen over Wi-Fi (and then via router optionally over ethernet).

Apple TV (4th generation or later) can connect to a much wider range of bluetooth devices, such as game controllers and speakers. Bluetooth is then also used for proximity of devices, and for pairing select Apple devices, although pairing isn’t strictly needed for the common functions.

Current software on ATV (third generation) after ATV settings reset states if bluetooth is turned on (both devices) and you touch an iPhone/iPad already configured with your AppleID etc. to the ATV that ID/settings will transfer to the ATV. Per initial post with bluetooth turned on (all devices) ATV couldn't discover either iPhone or iPad, all running most current available software.

Several third party (less expensive) bluetooth keyboards (Amazon) claim to work with ATVs, but fuzzy on which generations. Interest in keyboard was to expedite password input.

Neither iPhone or iPad (via Wifi) could 'see' ATV connected by ethernet to router. Have ordered 4th gen + ATV which hopefully will resolve these issues.

'Appreciate your thoughts and assistance

how about iPad? <larger keyboard>? will 'tap to transfer' work or is that old software text?

Sorry, I don't know. I use the Remote function in the Control Center on my iPhone. Given that I don't have a need to type things into the ATV very often, it's sufficient for my needs and I haven't explored further. But, you should soon be able to test it out yourself!
