M1 MacBook pro won't work over unsecured wifi..

My MacBook Pro won't allow me to use any unsecured wifi networks -- it does show that it's connected, and I can ping, but I can't browse or do anything else -- this is very bad and I see that lots of people have this problem -- apple?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 13.4

You need to be MUCH more skeptical about what you read, and where you read it. Online posts can be used to "Prove" anything, and also its complete opposite.

Mine works just fine on an un-encrypted network.

What are you pinging, exactly? a numeric IP address or a name? and which one?

Open a Browser window and enter:

1.1.1.1 in the address bar.

If you get the CloudFlare** splash page your internet connection is working. but your Domain Name Server (DNS) that looks up internet telephone numbers may not be working correctly.

**CloudFlare is NOT part of the solution, they just have the easiest-to-remember all-numeric IP address that reliably answers with a splash page.

if you can ping an address on the Open internet, your internet connection is working.

the easiest way to poison performance and cause instability is to add third-party virus scanners, speeder-uppers, optimizers, cleaners, app removers, and a VPN you installed yourself.

Most of those things do not run in safe mode. if you restart in safe mode, and you internet is working better, It's something you added.

This is un=-related to un-encrypted Wi-Fi connection. I have no encryption on my hame network, and all devices work just fine.

If you have installed any third-party anti-virus, speeder uppers, cache cleaners, disk cleaners, app deleters, or other such garbage, or a VPN you installed yourself, your wounds are self-inflicted.

if not, then take your MacBook Pro down to the business office and ask them to "make it go".

yes I can ping (eg 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8) but it's hard to say this connection is "working" as I can't browse or check email

browser (both safari and chrome) stalls and just sits there indefinitely, so not a perfomance issue, not looking for my connection to work better, hoping to get it to function at all

no third party anything in my stack

booting in safe mode doesn't change anything

thanks for your help
