My Apple Watch SE overheated while I was wearing it, and now will not charge. Why?

Red lightening is power reserve (battery totally drained) If you are certain the charger is working on ship's power and you charged it for 3 hours with no remedy, then it again points to hardware fail.

Today, 16 hours later and after a bunch of hard resets when I hold the start button I will get the red lightning and zigzag cord symbol for a second and then blank screen. Still will not charge. Of course, this happens on a cruise, not where I can take it somewhere 😊
Charger is not an issue. Works on my wife’s Apple Watch.
