After one of my external hard drives was disconnected accidentally, its name has changed from "AA" to "AA 1".
When I try to change the name back to "AA" under "Name & Extension", it automatically reverts to "AA 1".
Does anyone know of a way to change it?

The mount point for the drive may still exist as a folder. With the drive ejected, Go > Computer in Finder (cmd-Shift-c).
Do you see AA in that folder? If so, delete it.

Control Click or Right Click the drives name
Sub Menu appears and choose " Rename "
The existing name will appear unchanged but just Edit the name too your liking
Second image is the drive Renamed from " 2 GB " to new name " USB "
What happens if you restart the computer (Apple menu () > Restart…)?
(Just throwing things out here – in case this is a glitch that restarting will fix. I have no idea if it will actually fix it.)
The reason is that there is some AA named drive still in the system so it doesn't want to rename to this. Perhaps a reset is the best option, otherwise you might look into 'disk utility' and see what drives are connected according to the system.
