Alarm periodically not making any sound on iPhone

Roughly twice a month the standard alarm app simply doesn't make any noise when snoozing.

Before going further, I have tried all the recommended solutions with restarting the device, recreating the alarm, factory reset,... but at that point it's already too late. If I have to do these steps it means the alarm did not function and you can imagine the complications that may come from an alarm being completely silent. You miss important meetings, work overtime to compensate, miss half of your day,....

I like to snooze a lot so often after it goes off for the first time, I'll take the device in bed with me and snooze 3 or 4 more times. Once a month however, it will go into some sort of state where the alarm appears to be going off (I wake up with the alarm screen, ability to stop it or snooze), but there's no sound or vibrations coming from the device at all.

The issue first started on my iPhone 12, some 2 years ago. I then upgraded to an iPhone 13 in January 2023, the issue did not happen at all on iPhone 13 for a few months, and then came an iOS update that destroyed the alarm app again. I can not recall which update exactly, but it's been a solid 3-4 months now that I've been having this issue again. I'm currently on iOS 16.6 (20G75) and had the bug happen to me today.

Potential causes that I can think of:

  • Overlapping snoozes
    • Sometimes the alarm doesn't wake me, and it just continues to go off rolling into the next snooze period.
  • Apple Watch with notifications turned off
    • I don't like the watch notifications so they're permanently turned off, but at night the watch is always charging in a different room, not around my wrist. All other iPhone notifications still have sound in this mode.
  • Face recognition
    • When you look at your phone when the alarm goes off, the sound goes quiet. Perhaps the phone can see my face somehow from where I sleep? I move my phone in my sleep between snoozes so I can't really "put it back a certain way".

You can all imagine the impact a faulty alarm can have in your lives. This software bug has already caused me quite the damage to my professional reputation. How can a device so sophisticated get such a basic simple task wrong? We've had alarms in phones since 1996, and I've never had one of those fail on me. I'm seriously debating on purchasing an old school digital alarm clock but then I think, I've got this 800 euro phone with an alarm clock. There should be no need for me to go back in the past and purchase a device for each basic task all phones can do today.

What can I do or provide to fix this issue once and for all?

You may try some of these steps, please check after each step...

Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
Restart the device. That's it.

I've already mentioned that restarting the device is already too late. I always restart the phone after I encounter the bug and recreate the alarms, but then 2 weeks later it just happens again.

I'm strongly convinced that you are not a real person.

The reason I am posting it in the community first is to see if there are others with similar problems. I've had the same exact issue on 2 different phones now, so I doubt it's hardware related. The genius bar is always a gamble, you may have someone with a lot of knowledge or you may have someone that'll just send your device off to some repair center to have all of its innards replaced, and leave you without a phone for weeks on end. Again, I've had the same issue on 2 devices so it's highly unlikely that it's a hardware issue.

• Sometimes the alarm doesn't wake me, and it just continues to go off rolling into the next snooze period.

If you're experiencing issues with overlapping snoozes and the alarm not waking you up as expected on your iPhone 12, here are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem:

  1. Double-check that you've set the alarm correctly with the desired time and repeat settings. Make sure you're not accidentally setting multiple alarms that might be causing the overlapping issue.
  2. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  3. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  4. Make sure you have the latest updates installed.
    1. Update Over-the-Air (OTA) —> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
    2. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

If the alarm volume is too low or quiet

Do Not Disturb and the Ring/Silent switch don't affect the alarm sound. If you set your Ring/Silent switch to Silent or turn on Do Not Disturb, the alarm still sounds.

If you have an alarm that doesn't sound or is too quiet, or if your iPhone only vibrates, check the following:

  • Set the volume on your iPhone. If your alarm volume is too low or too loud, press the volume up or volume down button to adjust it. You can also go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the slider under Ringtone and Alert Volume.
  • If your alarm only vibrates, make sure that your alarm sound isn't set to None. Open the Clock app, tap the Alarm tab, then tap Edit. Tap the alarm, then tap Sound and choose a Sound.
  • If you connect headphones to your iPhone, the alarm plays at a set volume through the built-in speakers on your iPhone as well as wired and wireless headphones.

Manually adjusting the time on your iPhone in Settings to change app behavior, like game timers, isn't recommended and can affect alarms.

The apple support page mentions it only lowers the volume. In my case there is no volume at all. No vibrations, no volume, but the alarm is shown on the screen.

Updating iOS on your iPhone should typically not alter the fundamental functionality of the device. It's possible that there were underlying issues before this update, which you might not have been aware of previously or might not have noticed.

In general, iOS updates are designed to enhance the user experience, improve security, and fix bugs, rather than introducing major disruptions to core features. The reported issue of the screen flickering and displaying a white screen after an update is likely caused by factors that are not explicitly mentioned in your post.

iOS updates primarily focus on improving system performance, introducing new features, fixing bugs, and enhancing security. They are designed to preserve your personal data, settings, and information intact.

During an iOS update, your device's operating system is upgraded, but your personal data, such as contacts, photos, messages, and other information, should remain unchanged. However, it's always a good practice to perform a backup of your device before any major update to ensure that your data is safely stored.

It's important to note that while an iOS update itself should not alter personal details, it's possible that certain features or settings may be adjusted or improved with the update. In such cases, you may need to review and adjust specific settings to match your preferences after the update.

Always make sure to read and understand the update details provided by Apple before proceeding with an iOS update, and follow best practices such as backing up your device to minimize any potential risks or complications.

If the issues you mentioned are indeed caused by iOS, it's likely that numerous users who have upgraded to iOS 16.6 are experiencing similar problems. However, in order for the community on this forum to provide helpful responses, it would be beneficial for you to specify the nature of the issue you are encountering. Without this information, it may be difficult for others to address your concern effectively.

With the limited information that you have provided, It is hard to even guess the problems faced by you.

(not a hardware issue this happened with my older and newer iphone) I've been having this issue too for over a year and from time to time i come on the community to see if apple has any fix, and the only thing am finding is more threads like this one popping up with the same old instructions that will only waste your time and never solved the issue. there is even a thread from 2017 with the same bug and the same unhelpful suggestions of the geniuses. If apple can't make a simple alarm working by the end of the year am selling anything with that bitten apple on it.

Aug 29, 2023 12:06 AM in response to thrasv

I've started a support case by calling them. They gave me instructions to disable the face aware features and if it happens again they told me to call back and update further.

If it doesn't happen anymore, then I guess I'll still give them a call and tell them it's solved and ask them to escalate it to a bug fix or something so a developer may be able to fix the issue...
