Airpods Max Mic

so i produce a lot of music with logic(on ipad) so i was so excited to get the airpods max because of their amazing sound quality (and my ears are too small for regular earbuds(not kidding, My ears are less than 2 inches tall)) but when i go to record vocals it ONLY uses the mic on my ipad. I tried changing the input device, but the only option was the iPad itself. So can I not actually use the many microphones my $500 headset has?
