TV w/HomePods on ARC

I'm assuming the crux of my issue is with how the TV has implemented this feature so I'm posting here.

To get a handle on what I’d like to ‘fix’, consider the feature on the iPhone that allows you to have a ‘virtual' MAC address by turning ON the “Private WiFi Address” in settings. What this does is to mask your physical MAC and use a proxy or virtual MAC when attaching to a WiFi network. Further, those who manage their networks using DHCP reservations may have noticed, when this feature is turned ON you can’t reliably assign your iPhone/iPad/Watch to a specific IP address because the MAC is always changing. I assign all devices on my network DHCP reserved addresses via their MAC.

Now, what does TV have to do with this? Sometime early on with tvOS 16 I noticed a new feature was enabled that allowed (e)ARC to connect between your TV and eARC capable TV, AND provide sound from the TV to Apple HomePods — this feature requires an TV4KG2 or G3. I happened to have a pair of HomePods in the bedroom and gave it a shot. Though it was first labeled ‘Beta’, even in an official release it worked very well for me and I’m still using it. I had three (now two) devices hooked directly to my LG TV and the audio piped seamlessly to the HomePods (though does take several seconds to connect when turned on).

So what’s the problem? Prior to moving the HomePods to the TV I could assign them DHCP reserved IP addresses based on their physical MAC address (which did not change over time). Now, the HomePods no longer attach directly to the home WiFi, but rather seem to connect to an ad-hoc network setup by the TV, they appear to my network to be physically attached (or 'bridged') to the ethernet port the TV is plugged into (that in itself isn’t really a problem). However, now that I’m connecting to the HomePods via the TV, they act as if the iPhone feature “Private WiFi Address” is turned ON, that is, the MAC address keeps changing, and they show up on the network over and over as new devices, hence I cannot assign them a specific reserved IP addresses. I consider this a 'problem' because of the 90+ devices on my network (many other Apple devices as well), these two HomePods are the only one's I can't manage, and they were manageable prior to hooking them via ARC to the TV (as are a pair of HP mini's being used as computer speakers).

What I'm hoping is that maybe there's a setting I don't know about that could turn this 'private' address like feature OFF. If not, I'll probably have to condense this into an enhancement request, but appreciate any guidance those here might have (I've also attached a drawing of the system using this feature). Thanks for your time.

I’ve been in the same boat and had similar situations where my issue is unique or something people don’t care about. So can’t find a solution or advice on the matter.

Have you contacted Apple Support directly? I’ve done that a few times now with the odd issues and they’ve been fantastic. And helped me so much. If the tech helping you isn’t a full bottle they will bring in a senior advisor and also can move the help to a phone call and use screen sharing to guide step by step.

Worth a shot if you’re not getting much luck here.

Well I’m not too surprised this post hasn’t garnered any solutions, I imagine most haven’t experienced it, don’t understand the issue, or don’t care about the problem. I’m personally still concerned, and can’t imagine that Apple’s network engineers and administrators would be happy to have unmanageable devices on their network, but also imagine this feature (which is useful), may have been released before it was fully engineered and debugged.

I came back to post that since installing the ‘17 suite’ — iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, & HomePod 17 — there has been no improvement in the situation, the HomePods still have dynamic MAC addresses that can’t be assigned IP addresses or otherwise managed. The feature — ARC delivery of sound from TV sources to TV connected HomePods — still works well (though CEC can occasionally hiccup as it always has). I continue to hope this problem will be addressed (pun intended).
