Are you receiving any kind of alerts or notifications on the paired device around the time of the sound happening? If so, that could be related.
When it happens are the AirPods at a low battery percentage? This can be another reason for a sound to come on.
The AirPods can also make a sound if they're pinged via Find My. If you use this feature with your AirPods try testing the sound to see if that's what's being experienced.
