MacbookPro15 sleep/shut down

MacBookPro 2015 suddenly will not sleep or shut down. I click on shut down, laptop looks as though it is shutting down...but I see a few moments later it isn't shut down. Same with sleep mode. I have to keep it in Screen Saver.

I had not changed any settings in System Preferences. I close out all running programs/Safari/Mail,Messages.

What could be preventing sleep mode and shut down?

MacBook Pro shuts down rather than go to sleep It's a 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021) running Sequoia 15.3. The problem is recurring for at least six months. It happens both when I close the lid and when I leave it running attached to an external monitor. Any suggestions on sorting this out?

My MacBook shuts down instead of sleeping Randomly my MacBook Pro 2015 13inch has started shutting down whenever the display is off instead of sleeping like normal, it also turns off when I close the lid, I cannot find any fix to this and its making using my Mac pretty difficult at the minute I have the display set to not turn off but that drains the battery like crazy and I still cant close the lid even on that setting without it turning off

Press and hold the power button until the screen goes totally black ... about 10 seconds.

Then restart normally. This might well be a one-time issue that never returns. But you need to shut down and restart to confirm that's true.

Thank you. For shut down your advice seems to work. But it did not work for the sleep mode.
