Can’t choose legacy contact

My contact list comes up and I choose someone, but then there’s no button to push confirming my choice

iPhone SE (2nd generation)

I figured it out. When you go to choose your legacy contact, you have to pretend to send them a text from the Contacts screen that shows up. Once you hit their phone number, it accepts them as your contact.

Do all the contacts have Apple devices? Have they accepted your request yet? If not they will need to do so as this would be the only way that you can select them as a contact.
