Apple TV turning on by itself

I have an A1842 Apple TV connected to an old Sony Bravia KDL-46EX500.

It has turned on by itself twice now in the last few weeks.

First time I woke up in the middle of the night to see the power LED shining on the Apple TV. The TV was not on and I know I powered both of them down before going to sleep.

Now a few weeks after that happened, I came home and heard the same TV on and the Apple TV powered on as well. The Apple TV runs the TV app. I know I left the house with both turned off.

I asked my neighbour if they have an Apple TV in case signals from another remote were getting crossed. Is that even possible?

I see some other threads indicating units powering up by itself as well but no answers as to why or how.

In some instances I’ve felt mine happens because they are linked with HomePods, but not always. i can’t even use my HomePods to put Apple music on because the Apple TV comes on with it. Or I’m watching cable tv and my show gets switched off. You could disable Control TVs and Receivers to see if it helps but this of course is not ideal if you need to use the Siri remote to turn it on. This at least stops it from switching inputs and turning on the tv along with it but will still turn the box on.

Settings > Remotes and Devices> Control TVs and Receivers

You should submit feedback to Apple here: Feedback - Apple TV - Apple

tvOS 17 should be released very soon, so hopefully it’s being addressed.
