How can I approve requested downloads from my daughter with Family Sharing?

My daughter (12) has to ask permission to download apps. These come up as text messages on my phone as I’m the family ‘grown up’.

When she tries to download an app, the request for permission comes up as a text on my phone, but when I click on the message, it just takes me to the App Store and downloads it onto my phone!

What am I doing here? I want it to download onto her phone!

Hi Richard Mavor,

To approve an Ask to Buy request, we recommend that you follow the steps here: Approve what kids buy with Ask to Buy - Apple Support

To perform the recommended troubleshooting steps via the link above, complete the steps in the section titled "How to approve or decline a request."

If you're the family organizer, use your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, or Mac to approve or decline a request.

1. Open the notification to see the item that your family member wants to get. Can't find your Ask to Buy notifications?

2. Approve or decline the purchase.
Approve and Decline are located at the top of the screen.
3. If you approve, sign in with your Apple ID and password to make the purchase.

What happens next
After the item is purchased, it's added to your child’s account.2 If you turned on purchase sharing, the item is also shared with the rest of the family group.
If you decline a request, your child receives a notification that you declined the request. If you dismiss the request or don't make the purchase, the child will need to make the request again. In iOS 16.1 or iPadOS 16.1 or earlier, requests that you decline or dismiss are deleted after 24 hours.

Where to find your Ask to Buy requests
If you miss an Ask to Buy notification, you can find the request in Messages on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, or Mac. If you don't see the request in Messages, you can find your Ask to Buy request in Notification Center

We recommend the steps above because they will show you how to approve an Ask to Buy request.

If you’re still experiencing the same issue, then we suggest trying the steps here: If Ask to Buy isn't working - Apple Support.

Please let us know the outcome after giving the above steps a try.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!

Hi Richard Mavor,

With the Ask to Buy notification not arriving correctly and then taking you to the App Store, we have some general steps that can help resolve this. These include updating to the latest version of iOS on all the devices involved. Updating the software can often resolve these types of issues. Complete each step below:

1. Make sure that both you and your child have updated to the latest iOS or iPadOS on your iPhone or iPad, and the latest macOS on your Mac.

2. If you turned on Focus on your device, either turn it off so that you can receive notifications, or check your Focus settings to make sure that you can receive Time Sensitive notifications like Ask to Buy requests.

3. Try changing the name of your device, and check that you and your child's devices have different names. To see and change the name of a device, go to Settings > General > About > Name.

This information is from If Ask to Buy isn't working - Apple Support.

If that doesn't take care of this issue, please reach out to Apple directly. They can be reached using this link: Get Support The Advisors you work with will investigate further and provide more options.
