AVI is not a format, but a container. I have no idea if Roxio Toast can handle the format you have; there used to be good software years ago which is no longer compatible. You can try and see if Handbrake can handle it or Vimeo which is only online I believe. You may need separate software: a converter for the AVI and then an app that'll let you edit.
Note: if you do find the software, remember that this kind of work is RAM and processor intensive: do not run or do anything else while it is working on a file and you should have at least as much free space on your internal drive as the file you are working on so the computer has enough space to process it and write to it.
