G-RAID 12 TB drive won't power up

my G-Tech G-RAID from about 2015 just stopped powering up. It was set to RAID 0 or JBOD (it has been a while since I used it and believe it was one of those two). I would like to get info off of it, of course. I have tried multiple power cables that I know work and it will not power up.

It was originally set up on a IMAC running Catalina. It had powered on under Catalina.

I have been using a MacBookPro running Monterray for the trouble-shooting.

I have purchased another G-RAID (used and newer version - thunderbolt) and I set it up and it is initialized as a RAID 0, RAID 1 and JBOD.

I tried putting the older 6 TB drives into the new enclosure and regardless of which way I configured it, (I tried Raid 1 also, just in case) and it still says the drives need to be initialized.

I am concerned that the software used for distributing data on the newer enclosure is different that the older enclosure.

Is there a way to test the internal board on the older/2015 enclosure and figure out what component there may be fixable?

Or is there a way to try to download an older Configurator for the older model and try on the newer model (I can use a backwards compatible cable to with older IMAC running Catalina). If so, is there someone I can get the older Configurator software from? I cannot find it on my older IMAC.

I saw there was an older post along these lines from about 2017, but no resolution.

thanks so much in advance for info.

RAID 0 & JBOD are two different storage configurations, so it would be important to know what the problematic G-Tech drives were configured as.

Although, in theory, these storage configuration types should be compatible, it's up to the drive enclosure manufacturer to implement them properly. Just swapping drives to a new enclosure may not work as you have experienced.

Possibly, but this would be a good question to ask the manufacturer's support team.

This too would be good questions to ask the manufacturer.

Hi Tesserex,

thank you for taking the time to reply.

The manufacturer Sandisk does not support the older enclosures (they bought G-tech). I have found out more about different "generations" of RAID and have found a unit that has the same plug configuration on the back (so may be the same generation), but it is only an 8TB RAID. Am wondering if an enclosure designed for 8TB can also be used for larger sized individual drives. What do you think?

Thanks much,

Lori

The manufacturer should provide the enclosure's drive size requirements.

If you haven't decided on which manufacturer you want to go with, I strongly suggest that you give OWC (Other World Computing) a try. They not only sell these enclosures, but provide great customer support, during and after the sale. I do not work for them, but have been using their products for years and have never had a bad experience doing so.
