My iMac has a mind of its own

I have a 12year old iMac which is typing gibberish and won't stop.

At first I thought it was the keyboard, then the mouse. Have installed new generic wireless keyboard and mouse but to no avail. When you click on anything to type it just takes over typing the same letter for pages and pages and doesn't stop.

It seems like it's happened for every app I type in (listed above), at least once. It's continued since a system restart. Could there be some other program that is interfering? Java crashing or something? The problem is not the keyboard, I have tried others (bluetooth and USB) and all behave the same way. It is specific to apps. The keyboards work fine. This imac is old, so old OS can't be updated anymore. But this problem is new. Any ideas? thanks

P and Dash Button on Keyboard Suddenly Typing Weird When I use the P or - buttons on my iMac, they both type "p-" This happened all of a suddenly, I didn't make any setting adjustments. Any help- is ap-p-reciated. (It's very annoying!)

When I type, the letters are sometimes slow to appear I'm using a 2014 iMac on Big Sur and keep it updated. I've noticed for a while, that sometimes when I'm typing, the letters don't appear immediately, I have to wait a few seconds and retype them. I'm not that fast as typist, so I don't think it's me. It's like things 'freeze' for a moment. I've not noticed any other issues in other programs and haven't added or changed anything where I could point a finger. Any ideas on what's going on and how to fix it? Thanks, Bob.

If all else fails, consider reinstalling the OS.
