The backlight on my 3GS doesnt work

All iphone functions are working fine but the backlight doesnt come on ! i tried going into settings for brightness/ backlight ... but doesnt work. also hard reset several times but no change.
what could be the reason? Pls help -- is it possible that the led lights are not working anymore or is it just a software issue??

If the backlight doesn't come on, how were you able to go to Settings > Brightness without your iPhone's screen being on?

If no change after restoring your iPhone with iTunes - especially after restoring as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, this will mean it is a hardware problem - whatever the problem is which I'm not sure about.
