How to assign favorite contacts on Family Setup Apple Watch?

I set up my son’s Apple Watch using Family Setup. The phone app on his watch does not allow him to set favorite contacts… there is no option… the first on the list is “recents”. My own Apple Watch has a “favorites” link at the top of the Phone app. Is there a trick to this with Family Setup? I tried giving him permission to manage his own contacts and that did not work either.

Hey jmcarson3,

The family setup is likely what is not shown the favorites option on the Apple Watch as Favorite Contacts are typically set up on the paired iPhone, as mentioned here: Use Contacts from the Phone app on iPhone - Apple Support

Ensure that your son has iCloud Contacts enabled. As mentioned in Set up Screen Time for a family member on iPhone, "you can only manage your family member’s communication if they’re using Contacts in iCloud."

"Set communication limits on a family member’s device

You can block incoming and outgoing communication on your family member’s device—including phone calls, FaceTime calls, and messages—from specific contacts, either at all times or during certain periods.

  1. If you haven’t already turned on Contacts in iCloud on your family member’s device, go to Settings  > [child’s name] > iCloud, then turn on Contacts.

Note: You can only manage your family member’s communication if they’re using Contacts in iCloud.

2. On your family member’s device, go to Settings > Screen Time.

3. If you haven’t already turned on Screen Time, tap Turn On Screen Time, tap Continue, then tap This is My Child’s iPhone.

4. Tap Communication Limits, then do any of the following:

    • Limit communication at any time: Tap During Screen Time, then select Contacts Only, Contacts & Groups with at Least One Contact, or Everyone.
    • Limit communication during downtime: Tap During Downtime. The option you selected for During Screen Time is already set here. You can change this setting to Specific Contacts.
    • If you select Specific Contacts, then tap either Choose From My Contacts or Add New Contact to select people you want to allow communication with during downtime.
    • Manage a child’s contacts: If you’re using Family Sharing, you can view, edit, add, or delete your child’s contacts. Tap Manage [child’s name] Contacts.

If your child already has contacts in iCloud, they receive a notification on their device asking them to approve the request to manage them. If they don’t have contacts, they don’t get a notification and you can immediately add contacts.

When you manage your child’s contacts, a new row appears beneath Manage [child’s name] Contacts to show how many contacts your child has. Tap the row to view and edit the contacts.

    • Allow contact editing: Tap Allow Contact Editing to turn off this option and prevent your child from editing their contacts.

Turning off contact editing and limiting communication at any time to Contacts Only is a good way to control who your child can communicate with and when they can be contacted."

Thanks!

Hi jmcarson3,

It looks like you're correct, there's not a way to add to Favorites from Apple Watch on its own. Please leave feedback on how you think this could behave differently:

Feedback - Watch

In the meantime, you could use Siri to call a contact and make the process more simple. Here's info on using Siri:

Use Siri on your Apple Watch

If you also have an Apple Watch, another way your son might quickly get in touch with you is the Walkie-Talkie feature:

Thanks for this feedback. I suspected the feature was missing… it was why I wanted to get my son the watch… the dialing is confusing for him, which defeats the purpose in the event of an emergency. I have submitted the feature feedback — thanks for the link. I did also teach him how to enable walkie talkie… we don’t leave it on all the time on his SE2 because we have seen the feature draws his battery down completely by the end of each day. Also, the walkie talkie connection is less reliable than cell calls. Hopefully Apple adds the Favorite option to make the Apple Watch as fully function when set up through Family Setup. Cheers.

Thank you for taking the time to give suggestions. I have iCloud contact enabled for him, and the Favorites is still not an option on his Apple Watch phone app. My son does not have an iPhone. His watch is set up through my iPhone, and I set up his iCloud settings from his own iPad. I have gone through e urging you suggested (but on his iPad, plus on my own iPhone within the Screen Time menu), and I did have everything already enabled. When I add a new contact on his iPad, it syncs immediately to his Apple Watch because of iCloud, but he still does not have an option within the Apple Watch “phone” app to add favorites. This is a really needed feature as he is young and going through the multiple menus and picking which number to call is a but confusing… and really why favorites is so handy on an iPhone and Apple Watch (that has it). So I’m still stuck and frustrated. Cheers.
