Connecting Macbook Air M2 to iMac

I'm unable to connect my brand new Macbook Air M2 to my 2012 iMac. I am able to connect my Macbook Air (2015) to it though. It seems that Apple have removed the functionality from newer Macbooks. This seems very backwards. is there any way to get around this?

If you are trying to use the iMac as a display, Apple removed that functionality from all Mac computers produced in 2020 to present. There are no "direct" connection work arounds. There are solutions using a network but there can be issues with lag and just screen update performance. The simplest of these methods is to use Apple's built in Screen Sharing which depending on your use may be good enough. However, this does not create a second screen but mirrors what is on the Mac.

If you are trying to do something else, then please explain further.
