Apple ID Corrupted and disconnected to my iCloud Data

Not sure the triggered but somehow lost all of desktop & documents data in iCloud. After extensive diagnosis with apple support - they believe it was not a hack but that my apple ID profile may be corrupted and is not connecting/finding my desktop/documents in iCloud (to be clear, they show that there is no content which is impossible as I've always had desktop sync to iCloud). I know exactly when it happened - triggered by a legit email from iCloud telling me that my iCloud photos have been disabled and that I had 30 days to download all my photos (which is impossible because I had tons of storage).....this prompted me to follow their instructions to undo the disabling of iCloud photos. This triggered this strange issue. Anyone help - my desktop and documents have my whole life in it (I did not have time machine set up - darn it)
